   Golf Course Information

Description

Brooklawn provides a challenge for all levels of play thanks to the design strategy of A. W. Tillinghast, who re-designed the course in 1929. For the Club members, Brooklawns sloping greens provide the biggest challenge! Keep the ball below the hole is a common recommendation used by all members as the best strategy for approaching the small greens.

Off the tee, the fairways are lined with large trees, making accuracy more important than distance. In fact, many players will leave the driver in the bag in order to have the best approach to the greens. Sixteen of 18 holes allow the player to run the ball onto the green because there are no bunkers in front to go over. This makes the course fair for the higher handicaps players. However, no matter the handicap, if one misses the fairway from the tee, the many trees often demand hitting a fade or a draw on the next shot in order to avoid a greenside bunker or to put the ball favorably back in play.

Once on the greens, sloping putts are the rule and not the exception. It is not unusual to have to play two or three feet of break on a 30-foot putt. A good lag putter, who can read the greens, is always favored as a partner when the balls are thrown on the first tee to determine the teams for the upcoming match.

Par for the womens course is a 74 (there are six par 5s and four par 3s.) The mens course has only three par 5s and thus plays to a 71.

It is important to get off to a good start on the first six holes as they are among the most difficult on the course. Holes 7, 8 and 11 are Par-5s. Therefore, if one can negotiate the short but treacherous Par-4 9th hole with its narrow green and the Par-3 10th hole with its large traps on either side of the green, holes 7 through 11 are where you really want to score. Holes 12 through 18 are strategic in nature and properly placed drives are essential. Two of the most difficult greens on the course, 13 and 16, are located on the closing seven holes. It is a proud golfer who walks up the 18th with a good score going.

As all the members will attest, the best thing about holing out on 18 is the knowledge that it wont be long before another challenging round at Brooklawn awaits the player.
